Amos Fortune, Free Man

A year after living in Jaffrey Amos had a small fortune he earned by working hard. Amos wanted to help the children that didn't have a home, and he would use that money to buy them a little house and clothes. When Amos told Violet she disagreed it wasn't because she didn't want to help the children, but it was that Amos wasn't thinking about her and Celyndia. That afternoon Amos asked Celyndia if she took kettle and before she could answer Violet said” No she didn't take it.” Amos asked Violet if she knew where it was at. Then Amos told Celyndia to go play with the other children.  Violet told asked him why he always sent the children away and he responded that he didn't want the children to hear because they might have thing that aren't that pretty in a child’s ears. She left Amos asked Violet where the money was and she said she had buried it. He asked where she said in the woods but she refused to show him where. Amos went out looking for it and then late next morning he realized what Violet was trying to say. When he got home he apologized to her and he was sorry. Violet  gave him the money back and they were back to normal.

Amos Fortune, Free Man

That year was a busy; Amos and Violet had worked hard. Celyndia tried to help as much as she could. Her job was to pile up the wood Amos would bring from the woods. After Celyndia would finish her chores she would go out and pick strawberries with the rest of the kids.  Although she thought that she would not fit in. Celyndia came home and told Amos she felt like she wasn't going to fit in with the other kids. Amos told her that she wanted she could walk around the world and she would fit in where ever she went.

After a few months passed Amos wanted to move. He wanted to take Violet and Celyndia to a beautiful place where they would be happy. Amos told Violet about moving to the wilderness, Violet wasn't sure that was the best. She would always hear story about the wilderness and how dangerous it was. Violet decided that maybe moving would be the best. Amos took all they needed and then they reached a beautiful mountain. Celyndia asked Amos “What is this place papa Amos?” Violet told Celyndia “It is a beautiful place that someday we will climb. They went to a few towns, and none of the towns they went to seem to be the right one. Until they reached a little town named Jaffrey.

Amos Fortune, Free Man

After a few years past and I behaved will I got my freedom like Mr. Richardson said I would. I was the happiest man in the world but what I was going to miss the household and the domestic thinking of all that made me sad.  Then I met Violet she is a slave and I couldn’t purchase her until I had all the money and the purchase for Violet also included her little daughters Celyndia too. I've always wanted a family and kids but with Violet it is different because she is younger than I am and she is a very strong woman.  When I got all the money I needed I purchased them both and the next day we got married and she smiled at me and thanked me for loving, caring and giving them there freedom.

Hello it’s me Amos again after my new owner bought me he took to my new home. There I met my new owner Caleb’s wife. Once she saw me she asked Caleb” Who is this boy?”  Caleb answered I bought him.  When he told her she got furious and told him “You know I’m against slavery” Caleb told her “I know you are that is why we will be kind to him and take care of him.” She agreed with him and then they heard a knock on the door it was Mr. Richardson he came to see how my new owners treated me. I greeted him with a smile and a hello then Mr. Richardson looked around the house while I waited in the kitchen. When he got done looking around he told me “You will be free soon if you behave well.”

Amos Fortune, Free Man

Hello I am Amos Fortune a black slave. I was a freeman when I was at the village of At-mun-shi, but the young king had to cross us through the jungle. The young prince saw it everything animals and beautiful flowers. He stayed up all night to protect and make sure everything was going okay they had neither water nor food. I was sold to white people but never got to meet them. The Quakers captured me and took me with him. The Quaker asked the asked me who my owner was he did not know I was a freeman. I responded At-mun but for some reason I could not say that he was the young prince. So the Quaker called me Amos from now and on I will be Amos.
